Day 1

Arrival in Tbilisi Airport/Check in the Hotel

Day 2

Breakfast at the Hotel and Excursion to old part of Tbilisi:

Metekhi Church.

The inscribed-cross church built in the 5th century by King Vakhtang Gorgasali.

           It is located on the cliff overlooking the Mtkvari River.

Old Baths

Sulfur Baths, built in 17 century. Some of the pavilions are under the ground, and the red brick domes with the steam streaming from their top give a special coloring to this area.

Chardin Street

 Chardin Street is one of the oldest streets of Tbilisi. Now this is a favorite meeting place for its fancy cafes and clubs, little art salons and galleries. The street got this name in honor of the famous French artist, Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin.    

Old Caravanserai.

Built in 17 century by King Rostom, Caravanserai became History Museum of Georgia from 1980. Numerous halls of the old trading floor now are being used for art exhibitions and fashion shows.

Sioni Cathedral

Sioni Cathedral in Old Tbilisi keeps St. Nino’s Cross, one of the most valuable holy relic of the Georgian Orthodox Church. According to the legend, St. Nino who brought Christianity to Georgia made the very first holy cross in this country with the two rods of vine, and tied them together with her hair.

National Museum of Georgia.

Among numerous exhibits starting with prehistoric times, you can find here the legendary Gold of Colchis – land of the Golden Fleece.

Tbilisi – Mtskheta – Uplistsikhe – Stalin Museum in Gori

Excursion to Jvari monastery

Towering high above Mtskheta, the ancient Jvari (Holy Cross) Monastery has a beautiful setting located on the top of the hill overlooking the former capital of Georgia at the confluence of Aragvi and Mtkvari Rivers. A wooden cross used to stand on this site, which explains the name given to the church. A minor church of the Holy Cross was built in the second half of the 6th century, and a bigger church was constructed over the wooden cross between 586 and 605 by Erismtavari (Lord) Stepanoz I.

Excursion to Svetitskhoveli Cathedral

The impressive Svetitskhoveli (“The Vivifying Pillar”) Cathedral was built at the site of the first Christian Georgian church, where it is said, a local Jew, Sidonia, was buried with the Christ?s robe in her hands. In the 5th century, King Vakhtang Gorgasali built a large basilica with a projecting apse. In the 11th century, Catholicos Melchisedec built a cross-domed church and a porch in place of the old damaged basilica. This is the largest church preserved in Georgia. The lavishly adorned inner space and facades are impressive. The drum and part of the facade masonry date from the 15th century. The magnificent building, which has been used for centuries for the coronation and burial of Georgian monarchs, is enclosed by a wall.

Departure to Uplistsikhe

A large ancient complex of natural caves of Uplistsikhe city is located 10km away from Gori, on the right bank of Mtkvari river. Rooms of various sizes and functions, including dwelling halls are carved in the rock. Especially impressive are the pagan temples and Christian churches, the theatre, dungeons and wine cellars of the complex.

Excursion to Stalin Museum in Gori.

Besides the exposition of the museum, you will have the opportunity to visit a small wooden house, where the Russian politician Joseph Stalin spent his childhood, for that time being a little Georgian boy Soso Jugashvili, son of a laundress.

Visiting Kazbegi and sightseeing Gergeti Trinity Church

The complex of Gergeti Trinity church, beautifully situated on the top of the hill nearby the township of Kazbegi, overlooking the area, is the main chapel of the Khevi region. The bell-tower standing nearby is contemporary with the cross-domed Church of the Mother of God and creates a uniform complex together with it. Its impressive location, set before the stunning backdrop of the snow capped, 5033m high Mt. Kazbek (Mkinvartsveri), makes it a unique place to experience.

Day 5

Gudauri- Ananuri Fortress – Borjomi – Bakuriani

Visiting Ananuri fortress

Ananuri ensemble, dating back to 17th century, is situated on the left bank of the Aragvi River, along the famous original Georgian military highway, 66km from Tbilisi. It incorporates a circuit wall with turrets, a porch, a large church, a minor Church of Gvtaeba (Divinity), a tower with a stepped pyramidal roof of Svanetian type, a single-nave Church Mkurnali (Healer), Tower Sheupovari (Indomitable), a bell-tower, a spring and a reservoir. The facade is richly adorned with the fine relief carvings featuring human, animal and floral images.

Borjomi is a synonym for healthy, mineral water, spa and the lush green nature of Georgia. Pure nature which gives the mineral water the distinctive, sulphur taste, preserved in the forests of the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park.

Day 6

– Khertvisi castle – Vardzia cave town   – Safara Monastery

Khertvisi Fortress ranks among one of the oldest fortresses in Georgia, but the exact date of its construction is not known. The fortress already existed in the 10th c, although there is an evidence of earlier construction work. According to a legend, Queen Tamar held a competition to see who could build the best tower. From the eastern wall two tunnels lead down to the river, one served as a water supply route, the other for communication. A legend has it that Alexander the Great visited the site during his Eastern Campaign in the 4th century BC.

Vardzia Cave MonasteryThe rock-hewn monastery is located on the left bank of the Mtkvari River, 30km away from Aspindza, in southern Georgia. It is cut in steep cliff along thirteen tiers. The monastery has preserved around 250 caves. The royal complex was founded in the reign of Queen Tamar, between 1184 and 1213. The monastery is distinguished for its main church adorned with the portraits of Giorgi III and Queen Tamar. The complex includes cells, a stable, a refectory, chapels, a bell-tower, tunnels and shelter rooms. The monastery used to be supplied with water.

Sapara monastery  complex, (cross-Domed church 13th-14th) perched on the edge of a cliff, already existed in 9th century, but was expanded by the Akhaltsikhe governors Sargis and Beka Jakeli. The complex consists of churches of St.Saba, St. Stefane and The Assumption of Godmother. The church of St.Saba is the largest of all, and is notable for its architecture and mural paintings of the 14th century. The earliest surviving structure is the 10th century church, dedicated to the assumption of the Godmother. There used to be a famous 11th century stone iconostasis – Kankeli.

Bagrati’s Cathedral – The cross-domed Cathedral of the Dormition, located on the top of Ukimerioni Hill, was built in the 11th century, during the reign of King Bagrat III, due to which it was called Bagrat’s Cathedral. The cathedral is distinguished for its elegant proportions, grand size, facade composition, ornaments and relief carvings. Bagrat’s cathedral marked the establishment of a style of the advanced middle Ages in the Georgian architecture.

Gelati Monasterythe Gelati Monastery, once a major centre of enlightenment in Georgia for many long centuries, was a repository of many outstanding monuments of art, and still is even today. This well-preserved complex was founded by King Davit Aghmashenebeli (David the Builder) in 1106 and represents the flourishing medieval architecture in Georgia. 11 km north-east of Kutaisi the monastery, enclosed by a wall, comprises a central-domed church of the Mother of God (12th c), St George’s Church (13th century), a two-storey Church of St Nicholas (13th-14th cc), a spring, a bell-tower, a porch and other structures. The Church of the Mother of God has preserved wonderful mosaics, wall paintings and a fresco with an image of King Davit Aghmashenebeli. The tomb of David Aghmashenebeli is located in the porch to the south of the precinct wall.

Transfer to Kakheti region, visiting Signagi, lunch

SignagiSignagi town in Kakheti is enclosed by a large defensive wall built by King Erekle II in the second half of the 18th century replacing the ruins of an old fortress. Each of the 23 towers within the wall were named after nearby villages and respective families and served as a refuge in case of danger. The town, which also has preserved urban-type dwellings of the 19th century, is located on the top of the hill and presents splendid views to the Alazani Valley and the Kakhetian Caucasus.

Day 9

Gremi Monastry

Gremi, built by Levan, King of Kakhetians, in the 16th century, is the old capital of Kakheti. Gremi, cross-domed church of the Archangel and a royal tower, erected on a high hill, presented picturesque views of the Great Caucasus. The church is adorned with paintings contemporary to the building. Like other churches in Kakheti, Gremi Church of the Archangel is characterized by simplicity and light proportions. The complex includes the Archangel?s Church, a three-storey palace, bell-tower and domestic structures which used to be enclosed by a wall.

 

Alaverdi cathedral

 This impressive cross-domed church of St. George in Alazani Valley was founded in the 6th century by Ioseb Alaverdeli (one of the Assyrian Fathers). The existing church was built in the first half of the 11th century. Within the circuit wall of the church, there are other buildings – Peikar Khan’s Palace (12th c), a barrack, a refectory and a wine-cellar.

Ikhalto Academy

The medieval monastic ensemble of Ikalto is most notable for the ruins of the old academy, a religious and educational center during the middle ages. The building dates from the 8th-9th centuries with its most noteworthy Church of the Transfiguration (8th-9th centuries). The prominent Georgian philosopher Arsen Ikaltoeli worked at the Academy in the period between the 11th and the 12th centuries. According to legend, the famous Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli, author of the 12th century epic Knight in the Panther Skin, studied here. It is said, that every pupil kept a jug of wine under his desk, called a “doqi”. When comprehension flagged, a cup was used to brighten the senses and re-stoke inspiration.
